Blogging has become an important social phenomenon in the last few years. It’s an easy medium to use and gets your message across to you target audience quickly.  More importantly, blogging is a very effective means of search engine marketing & visibility.

What’s a Blog and Why is it Important to Lawyers?

A blog is just a simple text-heavy web page that is updated very often. Many people today use blogs as their means of being heard. Blogs are often valuable news sources that represent an individual’s unfiltered take on a situation. Blogging can be fun, but more importantly, it can greatly improve your search engine visibility.

Having a blog(s) can greatly improve your organic search positioning for your blog and website. Blogs should be thematic and pertain to your specific practice group.

For example: If you’re a personal injury attorney your practice consists of Auto Accidents, Trucking Accidents, Motorcycle Accidents etc. You should have a blog for the area(s) you want to build and expand. So lets say want to generate more cases relating to Motorcycle Accidents. Then you should set up a blog and have a website address similar to www.SacramentoMotorcycleAccidentAttorneyBlog.com. This blog should only focus on a few specific set of search terms, such as:

  • Sacramento Motorcycle Accident Lawyer
  • Sacramento Motorcycle Accident Attorney
  • Sacramento Motorcycle Accident
  • Sacramento Motorcycle Lawyer
  • Sacramento Motorcycle Attorney

The more you post to your Motorcycle Accident blog the better chance your blog will grow in popularity and rank high in search results. The ultimate goal is to get to the top, the FIRST organic search position.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Blog post should consist of only unique content. Copying and pasting content from other websites is no good and can sometimes have a negative effect.

Furthermore your blog should be a lead capturing vehicle. There should be a specific call to action, your phone number should be clearly visible and easy to find. In addition there should be a quick contact form on every page of your blog so a potential client can easily send you a message.

I have a website…why do I need a blog?

Having a website is essential and every business should have one. A blog is a companion to your website. Most likely you update your website every 6 to 12 months besides little tweaks for Search Engine Optimization. A blog can be updated on daily, hourly and bi-hourly basis.

As you dedicate more and more time to writing blog posts, your blog will grow in search engine popularity and rise to the top of search result pages. But it will also feed that popularity to your website through SEO links we’ll establish on initial set-up. This will cause your website to rise in Search Engine Result pages and more search visibility for your firm with a good chance that you will have multiple organic listings on one page.

I don’t have time to manage a blog!

We hear this all the time…it’s usually the first sentence. As busy professionals we only make time for activities that are of important priority.

So consider this scenario: You establish 1 or 2 blogs for a specific niche of your practice, if you’re a criminal attorney this can be; www.SacramentoDUIAttorneyBlog.com and www.SacramentoCriminalDefenseBlog.com. Then you dedicate 30 minutes a day to post some useful information (unique content) to each blog. In one month you can have 30 blog posting, in two months 60 blog postings. This is a lot of unique content which is really valuable to search engines like Google.

Then your blog starts to rank on the first page of Google for your targeted search terms, and then in a month or so it begins its rise to the top.

Result: After several months of actively blogging your blog is ranked in the top of search results for your selected targeted terms. Now your website is growing in popularity because your popular blog is linking to you.

So if having your site rank well is a priority, then you should consider blogging.
